The Joomla! project is submitting an application to Google to participate in this year’s Google Summer of Code™ (GSoC) program. To be an applicant we need to have some help from our community. We are looking for talented individuals who are able to work well with students to be mentors, as well as for the community to generate ideas for the GSoC students to build.

For Mentors:

Participating in GSoC is a great opportunity for the Joomla community to collect some energy from new blood in the Joomla project, pairing talented individuals eager to learn with skilled mentors, community members who can guide and assist navigating the seas of Open Source Development in the Joomla Project.

If you would like to mentor projects this year please visit the Mentor page where we will be posting up mentor information. This will be a short list of requirements from you, as well as an application form that you will need to fill out. We welcome anyone to submit to be a mentor.

For Ideas

There are two major categories in the Joomla! Project where students will be able to contribute to this year. Unlike past Programs where there was only the CMS to work on, this year students can choose between working on the Joomla CMS itself or the Joomla Platform Project that the CMS is based on.

If you’re a developer who has some time this summer to help out, we invite and encourage you to add an idea to the Joomla GSOC Idea Page for 2012, as well as add to the discussions in the Joomla GSOC Google Group.

Codero was this month’s most reliable hosting provider, and has been placed in the top 25 most reliable hosting companies for 10 of the last 12 months. Codero is a Kansas-based company which provides dedicated, managed and cloud servers, as well as eCommerce and small business hosting.

INetU took second place for the second consecutive month, having regularly appeared in the top 10 over the last year. The company offers managed and cloud hosting from its data centres in Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Netherlands.

The Spanish company DinaHosting took third place this month, with virtual, dedicated and cloud service offerings, as well as server colocation.

Half of this month’s 10 most reliable hosting companies use Linux, with slightly less than half running Windows Server, and one provider using FreeBSD.

Netcraft measures and makes available the response times of around forty leading hosting providers’ sites. The performance measurements are made at fifteen minute intervals from separate points around the internet, and averages are calculated over the immediately preceding 24 hour period.

From a customer’s point of view, the percentage of failed requests is more pertinent than outages on hosting companies’ own sites, as this gives a pointer to reliability of routing, and this is why we choose to rank our table by fewest failed requests, rather than shortest periods of outage. In the event the number of failed requests are equal then sites are ranked by average connection times.

March 2012 Web Server Survey

In the March 2012 survey we received responses from 644,275,754 sites, giving a rise of 31.4M hostnames (5.1%) since last month.

Apache continued to gain hostnames this month with a growth of 22.5M and, contrary to last month, was able to increase its market share by a third of a percentage point. nginx had another good month and experienced an increase of 4.7M hostnames or 7.82%. With all other major web server vendors showing higher growth than Microsoft’s 761k increase, Microsoft recorded a drop in market share of half a percentage point. The gap between Microsoft and nginx now stands at 23.6M hostnames.

Amongst the Million Busiest Sites, Apache again suffered a small drop in market share this month, losing 1,700 sites, extending a trend that dates back to August 2011. Microsoft gained 110 sites making this the first time it has recorded an increase since June 2010. nginx continued to increase its market share and gained 1.2k sites, whilst Google suffered a small loss of 289 sites.
